As riding season comes in full- force....

GROUP RIDE Etiquette 101
Just a few tips for for road for those group rides that number more than 10 riders

-LEAVE YOUR EGOS AT HOME. DON'T GET BUTTHURT IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO OR WHAT YOU'RE DOING IS UNSAFE. REMEMBER, IF YOU DO SOMETHING THAT IS UNSAFE AND ARE CALLED OUT ON IT, IT ISN'T PERSONAL. YOU CAN TAKE DOWN THE GROUP BEHIND YOU WITH ONE MISTAKE. IT'S NOT PERSONAL.

-Don't be late-It's rude and inconsiderate

-Know the route in case you get dropped

-Speak up if you get dropped. If you are falling back and you don't say anything then how will anyone know you are dropped? It's on you.

-in most cases take the lane 2 x 2 NOT 3 or 4 across

-Stay off the left side of the lane. you are already taking a lane. When you hug the left lane, cars approaching on the left side won't have 3' to safely pass up. We should be riding as far right as possible imagine we are in the tire tracks of a vehicle if we were driving.

-Pick a spot and stay there. Don't move around in the peloton

-If it is an urban ride, there will be lots of traffic, stay together, don't fall behind. Use your words

-Try and stay handlebar to handlebar, side by side. If you gap, stay with your partner and move forward together. This is not an opportunity for the person behind you to go around you to close the gap

-Don't cross wheels-Do not overlap the wheel in front of you. If you see this happening, please tell the cyclists to knock it off

-NO TRACK STANDING AT LIGHTS

-If you want to ride without hands, move all the way to the back of the group. You can take out the group with one bump. If you want to take off your coat, eat food, make phone calls, fix your hair, whatever, if you take both hands off your bar then you need to move to the back of the group. NO EXCEPTIONS.

-Ear buds in one ear only

-Call things out-Manholes don't need to be called out unless there is a hazardous condition on or around the manhole. A BUMP is a bump. Most of the time you can roll over a bump but need to have both hands on the bar. A CRACK is something you want to avoid because your front wheel will get stuck in or broken. A HOLE is something like a crack but is rounder and has missing asphalt. You also want to avoid this because it is a HOLE.

-If you have a very long train. BE AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU!

-If you SPIT or BLOW YOUR NOSE, move away from the group and RECOGNIZE the wind direction.

-Don't be in the front unless you know where you are going, or have taken Peloton 101 and Cycling Saavy safety course.

-Just because you are clear to go doesn't mean the 50 people behind you are clear. Pay attention. If the light is blinking and about to turn red, realize who will and will not make it through that intersection.

-Have fun, get to know the person next to you, watch out for each other, take pictures, experience the city and be kind and aware.

-always carry a Tube, CO2 and cash

other wise just #SIWYL say it with your legs

Attention Team Captains/Team Ride Leaders: We are beginning to put together the schedule for SACA rides for this year leading up to the Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River 2018. Steve Kramer has passed the baton to me (Jeff Porter) to coordinate the scheduling of this year's SACA schedule. We appreciate everything you did in 2017 to develop and train Bike MS cyclists toward their goal of riding in Bike MS. In the next few days, I will forward a list of teams and their representatives with contact information for you to check over, followed by a spreadsheet (by email) with the schedule for 2018 for you to pencil in your team and dates for rides your team will lead.

We welcome any teams not listed on our roster to help us lead rides.

Thanks in advance for your participation and leadership as we train for this year's Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River.

Thanks,
Jeff Porter
